Working with us

We are looking for an experienced database administrator to join our team. This is a full-time role, and we are happy to support flexible home/office based working although we do require regular team working from our modern, custom built office in Penrith. Reporting to the Head of Development Operations, this role will take responsibility for the performance, integrity, and security of the organisation’s databases. The database administrator will work closely with solution architects, product owners and scrum teams to understand organisational or client data requirements, ensure optimal database design and implementation at project outset, and identify improvements in existing data estates to support high performance, high availability data access.

Duties & responsibilities
  • Ensure databases are designed, provisioned, and maintained to ensure high-performance, highly available, and resilient data access.
  • Maintain data standards and retention periods to ensure adherence to organisational policies and regulatory requirements such as GDPR.
  • Conduct a continuous assessment of current data warehousing, data structures and database implementation methods within the organisation and identify areas for improvement.
  • Work closely with Solution Architects, Product Owners, and Scrum Teams to understand requirements and design high-performing data structures and database implementations.
  • Control database access permissions and privileges.
  • Implement, maintain, and test data backup and recovery procedures.
  • Develop and maintain database documentation.
  • Actively develop and encourage industry best‐practice working methods through in‐house and external training or demonstrations.
  • Ensuring the quality, documentation, and stability of delivered database solutions is maintained at a continually high standard.
Key skills
  • Excellent working knowledge of either MySQL or PostgreSQL. Knowledge of both systems would be beneficial.
  • Familiarity with using Unix like operating systems (Linux/MacOS).
  • Familiarity with Cloud infrastructure solutions such as AWS, Azure or GCP.
  • Excellent communication skills – providing verbal and written communication that is outstanding to both direct reports and senior management as well as other stakeholders.
  • Flexible and adaptable – capable of changing direction where required and showing flexibility to meet new demands.
  • Driven by delivery – able to self‐manage workload and continually meet agreed deadlines.
  • Multi‐tasking – can manage several concurrent projects and prioritise demands.
  • Solid people skills – an approachable and friendly individual who provides direction, monitors performance, and builds a positive and active working environment.
  • Thrives on change, showing an impressive ability to drive data methodologies forward.
Deliverables
Weekly
  • Where necessary, work with Solution Architects, Product Owners and Scrum Teams to design and implement high-performing data warehousing and database solutions at a project level.
  • Track and chase the status of any work items that have been raised with other team members or third parties.
  • Monitor database health and performance.

Monthly
  • Monitor and assess data storage, backup, and recovery solutions, including testing where required.
  • Check calendar for completion of previously agreed scheduled monthly/annual tasks and agreed SWG actions.
  • Work with the Head of Development Operations to define, enhance and maintain the organisation’s data estate.
  • Where necessary, work with internal/external auditors, affiliates or third-party partners to effectively outline and communicate the organisation’s data standards, policies and procedures.

Annually
  • Identify and agree professional development, training or awareness programmes that would be beneficial to the organisation or may help to embed new processes and procedures.
  • Review organisational data practices, software, and methodologies and where necessary, suggest changes or additions for agreement by Head of Development Operations and the IT Director.

General
  • This is a full-time Monday to Friday role with flexible working of 7.5 hours a day.
  • Flexible home/office working supported.
